Why does the Carbon Dome 2 cost more than conventional backpacking tents?

The Carbon Dome 2 is built with premium materials and manufactured by hand in California. Dyneema® Composite Fabric and custom carbon fiber poles are significantly more expensive than the materials used in most conventional backpacking tents.

Our freestanding dome architecture also requires precise cutting, bonding, and sewing. Unlike traditional woven tent fabrics, DCF has very little stretch, leaving minimal room for error during construction.

Every tent represents hours of detailed craftsmanship, specialized materials, and a commitment to producing an exceptionally lightweight freestanding shelter.

How does the Carbon Dome 2 manage condensation?

Condensation is a natural consideration with any single-wall shelter, particularly in humid conditions or when temperatures drop overnight.

The Carbon Dome 2 incorporates four mesh ventilation openings: two larger vents along the lower sidewalls and two smaller vents near the top. This arrangement encourages air circulation, allowing cooler outside air to enter below while warmer, moisture-laden air can escape through the upper vents.

The front door can also be partially unzipped from the top for additional ventilation when weather permits.

Although no tent can completely eliminate condensation, proper campsite selection and ventilation can significantly reduce moisture buildup.

Why doesn't the Carbon Dome 2 have a vestibule?

The absence of a vestibule is an intentional design decision. Our goal was to create an exceptionally lightweight, truly freestanding shelter without unnecessary complexity.

Eliminating the vestibule reduces weight, simplifies setup, and minimizes the space required to pitch the tent.

The interior provides enough room for two occupants with limited gear, or one occupant with additional equipment. Backpackers who prioritize a covered exterior gear-storage or cooking area may prefer a shelter with a traditional vestibule.

Why does the Carbon Dome 2 have only one door?

A single oversized front entrance provides convenient access while reducing the weight and complexity associated with multiple doors and zippers.

The opening is designed to be exceptionally wide and tall, making it easy to enter, exit, change clothes, and organize gear.

This simplified approach is consistent with our overall design philosophy: retain the features that matter most while eliminating unnecessary weight.

What makes the Carbon Dome 2 different from other ultralight tents?

The Carbon Dome 2 combines three characteristics that are rarely found together: a truly freestanding structure, premium DCF construction, and an exceptionally low trail weight of approximately 22.5 ounces.

Unlike trekking-pole-supported shelters, the Carbon Dome 2 maintains its shape without requiring stakes or guylines for structural support. This makes setup particularly convenient on rocky terrain, established tent pads, and campsites with limited staking opportunities.

Its compact footprint, crossed carbon fiber pole architecture, and minimalist design provide an alternative for backpackers who value simplicity, flexibility, and weight savings.

Although the tent is self-supporting, staking and additional anchoring are strongly recommended to prevent movement or damage in windy conditions.

Does the Carbon Dome 2 require stakes?

No. The Carbon Dome 2 is truly freestanding and maintains its structure without stakes or trekking poles.

However, we recommend securing the ventilation flaps with the included stakes to maximize airflow and anchoring the tent whenever conditions require it.

Never leave the tent unsecured in windy conditions, even when unoccupied.

How durable are the carbon fiber poles?

The Carbon Dome 2 uses a custom, narrow-diameter carbon fiber pole system selected to minimize weight while providing the flexibility and support required for its freestanding architecture.

Like all ultralight equipment, the poles require proper handling. Avoid forcing pole segments into position, ensure all connections are fully seated, and use appropriate anchoring in windy conditions.

Carbon fiber offers excellent weight savings, but it can be more susceptible to impact damage than some conventional aluminum pole systems.

How should I pack and store my DCF tent?

Always fold and roll your Carbon Dome 2 before placing it in the stuff sack. Never randomly stuff or compress the tent.

Repeated stuffing can create excessive creasing and permanent deformation in DCF, potentially affecting the shelter's shape and tension over time.

For long-term storage, ensure the tent is completely dry and keep it loosely packed in a cool, dry location away from excessive heat.

Can small punctures or tears be repaired?

Yes. Small punctures and tears in DCF can generally be repaired using DCF repair tape.

Clean and completely dry the damaged area, then apply a patch extending at least ½ inch beyond the damage on all sides. Round the patch corners and apply firm, even pressure. Whenever possible, reinforce both sides of the material.

DCF repair tape is included with each tent for minor field repairs.

Will Murphy Ultralight continue honoring warranties after the final production run?

Absolutely. Although the Carbon Dome 2 is entering its final production run under the Murphy Ultralight name, our commitment to existing customers remains unchanged.

All existing warranties will remain in effect, and we will continue providing warranty service and product support after this production run is complete.
